On Saturday 24th February, 17 students of the Duke of Edinburgh´s International Award (Bronze Award), accompanied by two teachers and the Adventure Seals team set out on the Bronze Qualifying Adventurous Journey exploration to Sinharaja Rain Forest. The students journeyed in three teams.
After successfully completing their workshops on map-reading, first aid, camping and practice journeys, the Bronze entrants were excited to embark on their qualifying journey. The experience they gathered in this trip was by far one of the most memorable ones, as every aspect of this journey was challenging yet filled with fun. The students worked in their respective teams to overcome the challenges they faced and they emerged from this experience with new found appreciation for the nature and feeling much confident in their skills.
Day 1:
Students reached the base camp at around 10.00 and set off on the first hike to see 3 waterfalls in Sinharaja forest reserve. On their way they were able to explore the stratification in plants and the rich biodiversity of the rainforest eco system.
After returning to the base camp, enjoyed their lunch, went onto set their camp with an upbeat attitude where everyone worked together, amidst some singing and giggles. The day ended where they had a dip in a nearby pool filed with fresh and cool water.
Day 2:
Today proved to be challenging as the hike was longer than the previous day and was through the thick forest area and the students were able to witness some endemic flora and fauna during their journey. On their return journey, Students were able to realize the meaning of “Rain” forest as it started raining. They were prepared for these sudden weather changes and their resilience to complete the journey as planned was remarkable.
Although our students were exhausted when they reached the camp, they continued to do their team work and ensured that the journey was a success. Finally, at the debriefing students were excited to hear from the assessors that they were one of the best groups who had continuous focus and commitment to complete the Adventurous Journey while completing all the AJ requirements.
