THE MUSICAL
‘Anything Goes’ is a 1934 musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter.
The story concerns madcap antics aboard the ocean liner S. S. American, where singer/evangelist Reno Sweeney is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt, only to find that she is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. Also on board the luxury liner is Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin and his sidekick-in-crime Erma. With the help of some elaborate disguises, dancing sailors and good old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart. Since its 1934 debut at the Alvin Theatre on Broadway, the musical has been revived several times in the United States and Britain and has been filmed twice.
