The Avurudu season was welcomed with characteristic colour, song and dance on Monday morning in a special assembly that celebrated the traditional rites and rituals of the Sinhala and Tamil new year. We were taught the significance and meanings of the customs and traditions of the Avurudu season by members of all Key Stages in the Senior School, whose work ensured that we began our week on a very, very joyful note!

Monday also ushered in Languages Week with an exciting range of activities linked to the learning of the various languages on offer to our students, as well providing opportunity for cultural appreciation too. My thanks to Ms Christine and her team as well as all of our students who made Languages Week such a success!

The Avurudu season celebrations resumed on Wednesday in a wonderful whole-school Avurudu Assembly that featured traditional song and dance performances from the talented performers of both the Junior and Senior Schools. Teachers and students were invited to attend school in Sri Lankan national costume, and among the traditional rituals celebrated was the boiling of the milk and the tradition of Ganu-Denu. It is always a pleasure to be part of our wonderful international community as students and teachers from all over the world gather to celebrate the traditions and customs unique to the remarkable island nation, Sri Lanka.

Wednesday’s New Year celebrations continued in to the afternoon with the opening of the much loved and highly-anticipated Avurudu Pola. I must thank our PTA team for their tireless work in bringing many of the sights, sounds and tasty treats of the Avurudu season to BSC! It was another wonderful event that included the crowning of the Avurudu Kumari and Kumaria. Thank you all for making it another wonderful BSC event.

It has been another busy week in another characteristically busy term, where students and staff of the British School continued to demonstrate their remarkable skills as academics, sportsmen and women, performers, orators and accomplished ambassadors for their school. As the Lent Term draws to a close, I sincerely thank, students, parents and our tireless staff for continuing to support BSC’s many, many endeavours and for continuing to make the British School in Colombo the very special learning community it is.

I look forward to seeing you all at the start of the Summer Term on Tuesday 24th April at 7.30am. In the meantime, I wish you all a safe and happy holiday, whether you are staying in Sri Lanka or travelling overseas.

With my very best wishes for the Avurudu Season.

Simon Harwood
