General Senior

This week, students in the Sixth Form celebrated the International Women’s Day. On Monday and Tuesday, they put up posters around the school with slogans to promote awareness of the event. They also started researching and preparing for a forum to voice their ideas and opinions. On Wednesday, they created purple ribbons to wear in school on Thursday. The School staff were invited to dress in purple to celebrate and support the cause.

On Thursday 8th March 2018, the Senior School students and staff gathered together in the Courtyard to listen to speakers on various themes from significance of the symbol and colour for International Women’s Day, the misconceptions of Feminism, the history of the IWD movement, gender parity to why we decided to celebrate IWD in school.

Ana Nazim and Shevanthi Dissanayake from 12C gave the welcome address and introduction to the forum. Kiyara De Silva (12D), Aditi Holey (12C), Anjanaa Prabagar (12C) and Chanya Gajanaike (12A) addressed the audience as well.

The floor was then opened for more speakers who each had a message or personal story to share with an interested audience. Among the speakers were Janek De Silva (12D), Oneyli Dandeniya (13C), Yenuli Siribaddana (11B), Harini Srinivasan (12C), Ms Sylvana Marjan, and Mr Robert Champion and Aditi Holey (12C).

At the conclusion of the event, the participants enjoyed delicious vegan cookie dessert.

This is the first in-house lunch time forum in the senior school celebrating IWD and the Sixth Form is appreciative of the support of the British School staff.
