This week really has been characterised by a range of creative initiatives, outside of the classroom, that really does credit to BSC’s tireless students. On Tuesday the HOPE Society provided a wonderful Bake and Craft Sale to raise funds for their on-going support of a range of charitable causes to support children in the local community. It is always very humbling to note the British School community’s sincere dedication to supporting members of the wider local and national community who are less fortunate than ourselves. I am delighted with our HOPE Society’s determined efforts and I congratulate them on another successful endeavour.

Tuesday also brought an afternoon of wonderful creativity to the Senior School with the much-anticipated arrival of the annual Poetry Slam, organised by the English Department. Students demonstrated their originality, creativity and appreciation of the power of language and performance in a tremendous programme of individual and group presentations. I sincerely applaud all of our performers not only for their bravery, but also for their clear ability as emerging writers and performers! I must thank our English Department for supporting this much-loved event, with particular thanks to Ms Chathuri & Ms Deepa for coordinating and arranging the running of the event itself. Thank you!

It was a pleasure to meet Junior and Senior School parents at Ms Jehan’s Parent Workshop on Wednesday morning. For this workshop, Ms Jehan discussed the notion of cultivating innovation, a key Cambridge Learner Attribute that is essential to help students face and overcome the many challenges that they face in their academic learning and beyond. I remind parents that Ms Jehan is available to discuss the issues raised in the workshop, or any issues you might like to discuss about your child. She would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to make an appointment to meet with her.

On Thursday, we celebrated International Women’s Day with a range of discussions and presentations by students and staff throughout lunch time in the Courtyard. Again, I am delighted with the initiative and innovative approach shown by members of our Sixth Form who allowed us to mark this significant day.

As the weekend approaches, I do hope that I see you at the annual Quiz and Movie Night organised by our tireless PTA Team. The evening promises to be a memorable and enjoyable one once again, so I look forward to seeing you there, either to enjoy the movie or to take part in the quiz!

To end, I would like to wish BSC’s delegation every success in this weekend’s MUN Conference organised and hosted by the Overseas School of Colombo. I know that all of our students have worked very hard in preparation. Thank you all for representing your school.

I hope you enjoy this edition of The Lion. Have a wonderful weekend.

With best wishes,

Simon Harwood

Deputy Principal (Head of Senior School)
