Innovative ideas and ways of learning is what we do in Year 4. Imagine the students coming in to their corridor to find that ‘aliens’, or at least a being or beings of some description have invaded one of their classrooms! The learners’ imagination was piqued and as if on cue, a couple of them shouted out “Ms, this could make a good story for our newspaper report writing in Literacy.
Armed with clipboards and planning, they set to work finding clues as to what might have happened, whether there any missing items as well ‘interviewing’ witnesses to bizarre ‘invasion’. Although after the excitement of the discovery had died down and skepticism crept in about the real involvement of teachers in this whole set up, the overwhelming majority of learners were eager to add more outlandish theories as to who, what, where, when and why - the 5Ws- these ‘conspirators’ could have done such an unkind act. The idea was to consolidate their learning about newspaper report writing and give students an insight into what a newspaper writer’s daily assignment might look like-breaking news when an incident has just occurred. The seeds for a future career might just have been sown in some minds…who knows?
