Founded in 1994 The British School in Colombo is an independent, co-educational school for academically willing children aged between 2˝ and 18. The school site houses both Junior and Senior Schools, with shared sports facilities, canteen and auditorium, but all other facilities are for the exclusive use of each school. Hence both schools have their own range of classrooms, science laboratories, computer rooms and libraries designed specifically for use in the relevant age groups in that section of the school. This allows us to give each pupil the facilities best suited to their own personal needs in an environment where progression through the school is clearly defined sand understood by pupils and their parents. Such concern for clear avenues of development determines the strategic planning  of  the school in every field,  not

just academic. The school is committed to educating the whole child through a range of extra-curricular activities. This means that we aim to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to find, excel in and be rewarded for those things they do best or enjoy the most.

The Principal is responsible for the running of the whole school, assisted by two Deputy Principals with specific responsibility for the Senior School, and by the Head of the Junior School, who has a separate team of senior staff. Throughout both schools there are staff designated to be in charge of each year group and each subject area, and who act as a link between the two schools to ensure continuity of academic and personal development. All of these are dedicated and well-qualified teachers with a wide range of experience gained in the UK and elsewhere. Financial support for the school comes from the Board of Directors, whose members are all prominent businessmen. The school has been supported by a UK advisory team comprising former Headmasters of prominent British Independent Schools and a Professor of Natural Science at Cambridge University; in addition the Mercers’ Company, which has fifteen independent or maintained schools in the UK that are closely associated with it, provides advice and assistance on matters relating to the curriculum, staff training and the general management.
